Securing Your Booking

If you would like to order a human or pet portrait when my calendar is open, please send me a high resolution, good quality photo that faithfully reproduces the details that are important to you. If you would like to order photos of more than one pet, this is also possible. You can even use several photos to create the work you have in mind. Details will be agreed by email.

Timescale

The time it takes to complete a portrait depends on the complexity of the work, the scale, the number of subjects and the medium in which it is painted. On average you should allow 3-8 weeks from start to finish. Depending on how busy my calendar is, there may be a waiting period. It is therefore advisable to book as early as possible.

Custom Commissions

Pricing is in Euro. Payment for the ordered artwork will be made by bank transfer or payment link. I will start working on the image after receiving a 50% non-refundable deposit. Upon receipt of your written approval, payment of the balance will be arranged prior to posting. I will then ship the finished artwork.

Although the oil pastel itself never dries completely, it is best to allow it to dry for a few weeks before shipping. Once the painting has dried for a few weeks, the first coat of varnish/fixative spray is applied. This should be left to dry for a few more days. Finally, the second and final coat of varnish/fixative spray is applied. This is also left to dry for a few days. This gives the painting better protection against environmental damage: dust, dirt, light damage and handling. If you would like your painting to arrive on a specific date, calculate the above and place your order 2-3 months in advance.

Once in their final home, the best way to protect oil pastel artworks is to place them behind glass with a spacer (passepartout) placed between the glass and the artwork.

For quality reasons, I create my oil pastel paintings using professional quality, non-toxic, highly light-fast oil pastels.

I seal my graphite and colored pencil works with a fixative spray. Typically, a colour pencil drawing takes twice as long to finish as a graphite. For aesthetic reasons it is also worth highlighting these works with spacers (passepartout) when framing. However, unlike oil pastels, graphics and coloured pencil works sealed with fixative will not leave marks on the glass if they come into contact with it.

Reference Photo

Tips for getting the best reference photo:
  • For portraits, the ideal reference photo is taken at eye level.
  • For pets, a sitting pose is usually the best.
  • An outdoor photo is the most natural way to reproduce colour.
  • Avoid bright sunlight. Too much light will bleach the subject and create harsh shadows. This is especially important in case of light hair or white fur, where subtle colours and tones can be lost in the photo.
  • If you want a background, it is best to choose one that is as uniform as possible. A cluttered background will draw attention away from the main subject. Keep the focus on their face.
  • For taking pet portraits, it is good to know that many or them are more lively when they see their favourite toy or tasty snack.
  • Email the photo in its original size, as instant messaging services often resize and recompress photos for faster transfer, resulting in reduced performance and loss of fine details.
My puppy is cute, but she gets very little natural light. Also, I'm not sure this pose would look good in a painting.
The perfect reference photo if you only want to capture a single nose.
Even though the picture was taken outdoors and the two dogs are at eye level, the scorching sunlight almost completely obscures the natural colour and tone of their bright coats.
Here is a perfect reference photo. He gets natural light, but just enough to capture the colours of his coat beautifully. He shows his pretty face and paws in a sitting pose. The subject is at eye level.
The lighting conditions make the dark tones completely black, rendering the subject of the photo cartoonish and unappealing. When recreating the uniqueness of a face, it is particularly important to be able to see even the smallest details clearly.
This image is blurry, and due to poorly chosen lighting, there are bright spots on the eyes. When taking portrait photos, it is important to focus on the face.
Over-lighting also removes characteristic facial features.
Outdoor lighting is best, or a professional studio shot that shows beautiful colors and rich detail.

Return Policy

As commissions are custom-made, they are not subject to the right of return unless they have been damaged in transit or have a manufacturing defect and the buyer documents this with a video recording at the time of unpacking.

In the event of a return, the product must be packaged in the same way as the original, according to the instructions below.

The picture should be mounted on a hard cardboard base, covered on top with glassine paper and placed in a foam sandwich. Wrap it in three layers of bubble wrap to protect it from heat. Place it in a sturdy box with "Do not bend" and "Fragile" labels on both sides. Fill the box with recycled paper. The package must be able to withstand heat, shock and stacking during transport.

To prove the condition of the product and the durability of the packaging, the buyer must email photos or video of the product and packaging.

If the work is returned to Zita Panyi without further damage, the price of the work will be refunded to the buyer within 14 days.
